Chapter 9 Summary

Simon wakes up in the night and finds the body of the dead parachutist and instead of looking to see what it really was runs back to tell the others that he’s found ‘the beast’.

Ralph gets told that Samneric and Bill have gone to Jack’s group to get meat so Ralph and Piggy decide to go to and find out what’s going on.

When Piggy and Ralph arrive they see everyone there (except Simon) laughing and enjoying themselves. Jack who spots Piggy and Ralph tells his group to give Piggy and Ralph some meat. Jack then has the audacity to ask who will join infront of Ralph who then argues that he is still the leader.

The argument is stopped as there was lightning and thunder which makes some of the boys nervous, Jack then tells the boys to dance around the pig the boys listen and begin to chant

“Kill the Beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”

Simon then arrives and has news to tell (he finds out that the beast is not a beast and is the dead parachutist) but he stumbles into the middle of the ritual and the children end up killing him.

Ralph (the elected leader) hears about the ‘beast’ and calls for a meeting immediately, Jack (who wanted to be leader but didn’t get elected) quickly becomes annoyed at Ralph and begins to mock ‘Piggy’ he also decides that the conch doesn’t matter anymore even though he’s not leader. Everyone begins to think that Jack is going to become leader as he’s giving everyone orders. At this time Ralph has had enough and decides to get all the ‘biguns’ and search the island for this ‘beast’, they find this new place of the island which they think is the ‘beasts hideout’ and Ralph leads as Jack follows with the rest of the ‘biguns’. The boys find nothing and Ralph says that everyone has to go back to the island but the boys want to stay and keep the hideout.

Wide Reading Project

During the year you will be asked to read a wide range of texts. Using texts studied in class as well as texts you have selected you will also complete a log of the reading process. Overall you will read eight texts including at least six written texts and two visual texts. You will complete log entries on each text and present a report on your findings.

Attached is the outline of your required personal reading project – inside is the guidance you need to make sure your own-choice reading is going to meet the wide reading criteria.

You can always ask your teacher for advice about which texts would be best to concentrate on – and once you’ve read each text, you’ll then be asked to write a journal entry on your blog explaining how it helped develop your understanding of The Individual and Society.

This year everyone in the school will be required to have a ‘book at hand’ – and for English students, it makes a good idea to make that book one that helps you towards this reading project.
